Assignments

You’ll be expected to post comments to the class website, make slide presentations, and submit papers electronically. You may conduct research either online or through conventional (library, etc.) resources.

Writing assignments (weekly blog posts, papers), in-class presentations (on themes in photography as well as individual artists), and class discussion are designed to foster an understanding of concepts of photographic criticism. For the final project, students are asked to demonstrate a critical understanding of art world practice by situating their own work within the larger context of recent photography.

Evaluation and grading:

  • Assignments: All assignments are due on dates noted. Late projects will receive an automatic reduction of one letter grade, unless agreed upon in advance with the instructor.
  • Participation means that you are prepared, on time, and ready for each class. Participation is the heart of the class; weekly readings and blog posts are required (not optional) and are meant to deepen your understanding and spur in-class (and online) conversation.
  • Attendance is mandatory. There is no substitute for working and participating in class. Absence will impact final grade. Undo tardiness following a given break will result in an absence. Leaving before the class is over is considered an absence. Three absences are grounds for failure.
  • Tardiness: Three tardies will be counted as one absence. Ten minutes late is considered tardy. Unless cleared with me, arriving more than 20 minutes late will be considered absence.
  • Academic Warning: Students who do not complete and submit assignments on time and to a satisfactory standard will fail the class. It is the student responsibility to obtain missed assignments from other classmates and make up work in time for the next class. Failure to make up any missed work will result in a failed mark for the assignment in question.

Grading distribution:

  • Weekly Work (attendance blog posts, class discussion, weekly presentations) = 30%
  • Assignment 1 (Paper) = 15%
  • Assignment 2 (Team Presentation) = 15%
  • Assignment 3 (Psychogeography shoot) – 5%
  • Assignment 4 (Final Project/Presentation) =30%
  • Gallery Work = 5%
